Contract type work pattern: Full time – Open ended

About the role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for a Laboratory Technician to provide support for the operation of the Structures laboratory to facilitate engineering research. This includes the design and construction of test rigs, the preparation of test specimens, the planning of instrumentation, and basic machining and fabrication.

The post holder will ensure that all work is conducted in a safe and proper manner in accordance with prescribed directives.

This is a full time open ended post. 

What you would be doing:

You will work within the Structures laboratories to provide support for experimental projects, including basic design, construction, assembly and operation.

You will also assemble components ranging from small, detailed components to large scale test specimens for evaluation in test rig situations.

Providing support and advice to academics and researchers, you will plan and prioritise work activities with support from the Laboratory Manager.

You will also provide a support service using both traditional and modern workshop skills as required, for the production and modification of equipment for a structure’s laboratory application.

What we are looking for:

  • An HND/ONC or equivalent in an engineering subject is essential, together with experience of working in a university workshop/laboratory environment.
  • You will also have practical experience in the use of traditional engineering machines and hand tools and the ability to work from engineering drawings and written instructions.
  • An ability to organise your own workload from a prescribed list of tasks is essential, coupled with the ability to deal with a wide range of people and a flexible attitude towards work and meeting deadlines.
