The Role

The School of Humanities is looking to recruit a full-time Teaching Fellow in Philosophy to join our academic team. The post requires a passion for teaching coupled with a preferred research and scholarly background in one or more of the following areas: philosophy of language, philosophy of disability, comparative philosophy, philosophy of mathematics. It is advantageous to have interest in and experience of teaching both analytic and continental philosophy.

You will contribute to BA Philosophy, with opportunities to shape this provision and develop the portfolio of courses as part of a dynamic interdisciplinary subject team. You will have responsibility for the development, preparation and delivery of teaching, learning and assessment both at undergraduate and postgraduate. You will ensure that teaching is informed by contemporary research and develops the ability of students to engage in debate, critical discourse, and rational thinking. This role will also undertake scholarly activity, as appropriate, and assist with the development of external partnerships both in the UK and overseas.

Qualifications Required

  • Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or Honours Degree with appropriate professional qualification and/or membership
  • A teaching qualification or acceptance of the requirement to acquire one if not already held
  • PhD or active membership of an appropriate professional body would be advantageous

Our Successful Candidate

You will have demonstrable experience of successful teaching at higher education levels 4-7 in Philosophy with high standards of teaching, learning and student engagement.

Enthusiastic and self-motivated, you will have experience supporting, enhancing and engaging in an ‘active learning’ pedagogy with evidence in proactively supporting student success.

Experience and awareness of learners cultural differences and expectations with the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds is essential.

The ability to work both independently and part of a wider team with the willingness to engage in flexible ways of working are key skills required for this role.
