About the role

With a history spanning over 50 years, Bournemouth Film School (BFS) sits at the heart of Arts University Bournemouth and brings together the disciplines of acting, animation, costume, creative writing, dance, events management, film production, make-up, performance design and film costume, and visual effects. Courses are modelled on contemporary industry practice, contextualised by a philosophy of practical learning in an academic environment.

We are looking to recruit a Technician to work within established teams of specialist technical, production and academic staff, to support undergraduate students studying on our BA (Hons) Acting, BA (Hons) Creative Writing, BA (Hons) Dance and BA (Hons) Events Management courses and to contribute to team deliverables across Bournemouth Film School.

With proven practical experience in a technical capacity, within live event or performance settings, you will have a good working knowledge of lighting, sound and/or video equipment and software, and experience in the planning and assembly of simple stage and exhibition structures. Providing broad technical support on a day-to-day basis, you will also contribute to the planning and delivery of a wide variety of live projects including theatre productions, dance productions and live events. Previous experience of working in an educational institution would be advantageous.

Key duties of this post include supporting colleagues in their delivery of technical and health and safety workshops and demonstrations to groups of students on new and existing equipment, resources, processes and techniques; assembling and operating equipment to support live productions and events; issuing and receiving equipment and resources to and from stores, including undertaking first line maintenance and maintaining inventories and asset lists; ensuring processes are followed and documentation produced to maintain and manage health, safety and welfare; and providing effective and reactive technical support throughout the working day, often across the wider university community supporting collaborative activities and projects.

Ideally educated to undergraduate degree level, you must hold a minimum level 3 qualification in a relevant subject, and GCSE, minimum grade C/4, or equivalent, English and Maths. The successful candidate will participate in continuous professional development activities to ensure subject knowledge and experience is maintained in line with industry trends.

You will need to be flexible in your approach to the working day and environment as this varied post supports a diverse range of individuals and will entail evening and weekend working. Regular travel and transportation of resources to various university sites and external venues and locations will be required, for which a full UK driving licence is necessary.

Our benefits

In meeting your performance expectations, each year you’ll have a salary increase in line with the grade of your role.  As well as this there is an annual cost of living increase.  AUB provides generous holiday entitlement, and you will be enrolled in the Local Government Pension Scheme (professional services staff) or the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (academic staff) from day one of employment.  Along with subsidised bus travel, cycle to work and annual savings schemes, our broad range of benefits can be explored on the AUB careers website.

AUB has an agile working policy, and flexible working can be considered.  If you require support with your application or have any questions about the role or recruitment process, please email us. If you are disabled, we are committed to supporting you with any reasonable adjustments you require, so please email us and we’ll be in touch.
