Job description: Overview

In Hull we work with local growers and third party processing facilities to annually produce over 40,000 tonnes of peas for the Birds Eye Brand. Ahead of our annual harvest, dedicated Birds Eye fields people walk the fields everyday caring and nurturing for the crop to ensure that the peas are harvested at optimum quality as required for the Birds Eye brand.

To undertake a structured programme of training to become an experienced Fields Person, with the aim of being able to take accountability for the annual drilling and harvest plan; this includes planning, drilling, agronomy, harvesting logistics and reporting. This will involve building and maintaining relationships with growers and factory-based staff to ensure the precise management of all aspects of pea crop production are delivered to exacting quality standards in a timely and cost effective manner.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of the pea growing and harvesting operation to supply the required quantity and quality of peas to the factory, including:
  • Assessing suitable fields for inclusion
  • Creating harvest plans
  • Managing the drilling plan
  • Monitor crop growth, maturity and health
  • Walking crops, providing Agronomic support to department.
  • Implement harvest plan
  • Seed stock management at local level including movement & stock accounting.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with key stakeholders, including:
  • Drill operators for implementation of drilling plan
  • Farmers
  • Liaison with research and development peers for trials and problem solving
  • Management of the harvest operation and colleagues
  • Data analysis and report writing, in order to identify learnings and improvements for future harvests.
  • Be involved with the departments trials and crop development programme to ensure accurate collection of data and analysis.
  • Helping to deliver company commitments to sustainable development, ensuring the strategic influence on our farmers and to cascade our sustainable principles to stakeholders.
  • Active championing and projection of the Birds Eye brand including representation at social engagement opportunities & CSR such as School education days and career events.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Agricultural Experience
  • Agricultural Qualification – Educated to HND level in Agriculture/Horticulture

Desirable:

  • Experience of pea/vegetable harvesting
  • Experience of agricultural supply chains
