The Role
The successful candidate will serve as the University’s Chief Academic Officer overseeing the university teaching portfolio, the academic regulations and processes, and the quality assurance systems.
Candidates for the post will have a demonstrable and successful track record of leadership, strategic planning and operational resource management in an academic institution. They will be committed to the achievement of world-class research and education with a consultative, collaborative, and open approach and an ability to operate and influence both within and beyond the University, locally, nationally and internationally. The Vice President Academic and Registrar will be expected to provide visible leadership to Faculties and build positive relationships internally and externally.
The role of Vice President Academic and Registrar is a highly strategic senior position responsible for academic leadership and oversight across a wide range of University matters. This person will play a pivotal role in the continued success and growth of the University and is responsible in particular for ensuring that Maynooth University continues to achieve and reach the objectives set out in the Strategy 2023 – 2028.
Reporting to and working closely with the President, the Vice President Academic and Registrar oversees academic planning, regulations, academic administrative processes, and student recruitment. They will do this through leadership and collaboration with faculty Deans and departments, managing academic standards, regulations, and administrative processes.
Essential Criteria
The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate:
- Doctorate degree or equivalent.
- A significant track record in innovative teaching and research.
- A strong academic reputation, with a scholarly approach to education, reflecting the importance of research informed academic portfolios
- Substantial track record of academic leadership at a senior level including evidence of leading and delivering a strategic vision through strategic planning and operational resource management in a major academic institution.
- Evidence of a strong commitment to, and understanding of, University quality management processes, relevant professional, statutory and regulatory bodies
- Ability to influence and lead change across the institution, and to leverage coordinated effort and policy / process enhancements
- In depth understanding of emerging national and global trends in Higher Education and the impact this has on the University’s academic direction and priorities across all discipline areas.
- A working knowledge of the major policy, regulatory and strategic issues, and other challenges, facing higher education in Ireland and internationally together with a record of seeking and implementing innovative solutions at a senior level.
- Experience and expertise in all aspects of governance particularly as these relate to higher education or public-sector institutions.
- Competent in creating transparent structures and processes that are designed to assess risk and ensure accountability, responsiveness, empowerment, and participation, in a large and complex organisation.
- Strong influencing and negotiation skills, together with the ability to nurture relationships with a wide range of stakeholders involved with Maynooth University.
- Strong financial acumen to manage budgets and resources
