About the role
The NIHR Leicester BRC has been funded £26.1 million from December 2022 to November 2027 to carry out pioneering research into medical advancements into illnesses linked to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease and the consequences of inactivity will continue to push boundaries of knowledge in clinical medicine. Three new speciality areas have joined the NIHR Leicester BRC for the first time: Personalised cancer prevention and treatment, Environment – looking at how the environment impacts on long term health conditions – and Using data to better understand multiple long term health conditions and factors specific to the health of ethnic minority populations. In addition, the respiratory speciality is joined by experts in infectious diseases.
Our overall purpose is to translate scientific breakthroughs in these areas into diagnostic tests, preventions and life-saving treatments for our patients. We do this by creating a collaborative workspace that allows scientists and clinicians to share their findings and deliver research that is relevant to both patients and the professionals who treat them. At Leicester BRC, we are committed to working with all experts, and the patient is the most important expert of all. A large group of local people interested in our work help us plan and deliver our research with insight into the experience of living with illness.
The Genetic Epidemiology Research Group specializes in the discovery of genetic causes of disease to advance drug development and precision medicine. Our focus is on respiratory, cardiovascular and psychiatric genomics but we welcome applications from other clinical areas. The group develops and applies statistical methods to enable genetic epidemiology studies, with particular expertise in causal inference, risk prediction and multiplicity. Through the group’s leadership of international consortia and local cohorts, and contribution to low-and-middle-income country studies, the group has built infrastructure required for the next generation of genetic epidemiology studies. The group contributes to teaching on postgraduate degrees in Medical Statistics and Bioinformatics, undergraduate degrees in Biological Sciences and Psychology, and clinical training in Public Health.
The post-holder will make a significant teaching and leadership contribution to these programmes and others across the College of Life Sciences and the wider University. You will also draw on academic experience to underpin and carry out research and teaching activities, which align with the strengths of the Genetic Epidemiology Research Group, while developing their contributions to and achievements in impact, knowledge exchange, leadership and citizenship.
About you
To be the ideal candidate for this role you will have experience relevant to contemporary genetic epidemiology studies for example, in GWAS, integrative genomics or Mendelian randomisation, and experience of statistical methods development. You will also have knowledge of contemporary data science practice, including advanced IT skills. You will have a track record of internationally recognised publications and demonstrable potential to attract external research funding. Experience of teaching and of research student supervision would also be an advantage.
